Cashman's odd assessment of Wang, need we wonder why he can't scout better?
Wang was better in his second rehab start earlier today. He threw 7 innings of 4 hit shoutout ball vs the Clippers. This was not your typical minor league team either, they were hitting an international league best .285 as a team and offered a line littered with major leaguers Travis Hafner, Andy Marte and Tony Graffanino.
Wang said: "My sinker is moving well," Wang said. "I felt it right away." He topped out at 92 while inducing 12 ground balls, zero walks, and splintering a few bats. Oh, and the Yankees won 3-0. 2 of the 4 hits that he gave up included a broken bat blooper by bopper Travis Hafner, and a swinging bunt by Columbus catcher Chris Gomez. Sounds like a pretty dominant outing.
So what does the Yankee's General Manager say?
"He didn't have the slider like he did last time," said Yankees GM Brian Cashman, who has been on hand for both starts. "Performance-wise, he did terrific. This is a much better hitting club, but his stuff was better last time although he performed great today."
His "stuff" was better last time? This is a guy who lives - and DIES - with his sinker. Wang's sinker is HIS stuff - and Wang himself said his sinker is moving well, etc. All the ground balls, the broken bats, Wang says he felt the sinker right away - sounds like a good 'stuff' day to me? Maybe he threw harder last time, but harder for WANG is usually "worse" stuff.
What can I tell ya? eh, I guess Cashman's lack of ability to really evaluate talent is a source of great frustration for me, and many other fans.
